| Pharmacological actions | Tetracycline antibiotics. Doxycycline is a highly effective, broad-spectrum, semi-synthetic antibiotic that rapidly inhibits bacterial growth and reproduction by reversibly binding to receptors on the 30S subunit of bacterial ribosomes, interfering with the formation of ribosomal complexes between tRNAs and mRNAs, and preventing peptide chain elongation and inhibiting protein synthesis. Doxycycline inhibits both Gram-positive and negative bacteria. Bacteria are cross-resistant to doxycycline and oxytetracycline. |
