| Pharmacological actions | Sulfadiazine antimicrobials. Sulfadiazine inhibits the synthesis of dihydrofolate by competing with p-aminobenzoic acid for the enzyme dihydrofolate synthase, resulting in bacterial inhibition. Methoxybenzidine is an antibacterial potentiator, through the inhibition of dihydrofolate reductase, so that dihydrofolate can not be reduced to tetrahydrofolate, hindering the sensitive bacterial folic acid metabolism and utilisation. Combined with sulfadiazine, methotrexate has synergistic effect. |
